About this event
Since the early 2000s, Tujiko Noriko has been rewriting the possibilities of avant pop. Her early albums 少女都市 (Girl City) and ハードにさせて (Make Me Hard), both issued by the legendary Mego label, transformed the possibilities of song. Working with extreme processing and real time transformation of music and voice, Noriko created a spell binding new vision of song form. Noriko's work is equal parts curious lyrical interplays, devolved harmony, stuttered rhythm and chaotic bursts of noise. Since her rise she has both refined and expanded her palette of sound, uncovering an increasingly divergent path which has taken in ambient works, soundtracks and numerous collaborations. She returns to Brisbane for Mono for the first time in over a decade.
Noriko is joined by Portland-born and Brisbane-based artist Unregistered Master Builder (Joseph Burgess). Working at the nexus of textiles, sound and kinetic art, Unregistered Master Builder creates sound-based performances that centre the act of textile creation. A radical repositioning, Unregistered Master Builder seeks to extract, highlight and repurpose the excessive forces and forms that travel as part of textile creation.
Tujiko Noriko’s visit is made possible by Liquid Architecture.
Mono is the IMA's experimental sound program curated by Room40. Since 2006, Mono has brought sonic experimentation and boundary-pushing performance to Brisbane/Meanjin. Mono turns 20 in 2026.
